With "King Remembered In Time," Big K.R.I.T. takes on the title of his bold namesake and gives a performance that strengthens his core following.

While the release of his major label debut Live From The Underground may have been a career benchmark for the Meridian, Mississippi-native, Big K.R.I.T.’s reputation at this point has largely been built on his ability to deliver mixtapes that rival full-length albums. With as many mixtapes as years since dropping K.R.I.T. Wuz Here in 2010, Justin Scott shows little signs of a debut hangover on King Remembered In Time.

K.R.I.T. has unmistakably progressed as a lyricist, and his latest project illustrates this thoroughly with the memorizing licks of “R.E.M.” and “Meditate,” as well as the haunting visuals on “Banana Clip Theory.” Detailing the devastation brought on by gun violence, Big K.R.I.T. twists rhymes as he attests, “I heard a gun the other day, it spoke to me and told me power / Was the only thing that we could lose, so don't be afraid to let it shower.”

Taking a more metaphorical approach, “Life Is A Gamble” plays on the theme of survival; “This tracks my gurney, my verse can be the ventilator / So I breathe, ‘cause loathing in Las Vegas wasn't meant for me / Too scared I'll stay too long and forget where I'm really meant to be / Heaven maybe, heaven lately, but all these lights are captivating / I had to play it, for the sake of me and mine / Lord, I pray I hit it big this time.” The immaculate 9th Wonder backdrop here serves as the first record on a Big K.R.I.T. project not produced by the man himself. He has recently stated that his sophomore album will feature other producers, and if this is any indication of its direction, fans have little to worry about with the transition.

Accustomed to keeping a relatively short guest list on hand, Krizzle taps frequent collaborators for results that do not disappoint. The mellow vibe and scent of fresh trees in the air courtesy of Wiz Khalifa and the self-proclaimed “Kush God” Smoke DZA make “Only One” a smoker’s anthem, While Bun B’s appearance on “Shine On” justifiably warrants a petition for a duo project between the two southern emcees. Matched up with his Def Jam brethren Trinidad James, “My Trunk” is a charismatically brash record that will have even the most introverted listener doing a shoulder lean.

If there’s an inadequacy to point out on King Remembered In Time, it would be a slight dip in execution from its predecessors. Whereas Return Of 4Eva and 4Eva N A Day flowed smoothly between tracks, an unsettling snippet like the Future-assisted “Just Last Week” or his staggered cadence on “WTF” stymies an otherwise outstanding track list. Similarly, his hook game hasn’t developed much. In the past he’s gotten away with terse lines on “Yeah Dat’s Me” and “Sookie Now” off the strength of his zeal, but shouting, “What the fuck we gonna do now?” and “How you love that?” incessantly isn’t the most creative way to keep someone engaged.

Big K.R.I.T. takes on the title of his bold namesake with a performance that will not only strengthen his core following, but also leave little doubt that failure is not in his repertoire. With a valiant demeanor, he asks, “What’s a king without a crown?” It’s a fair question, because frankly it’s been a while since his dome has been vacant.

DX Consensus: "Free Album" (the highest possible praise for a mixtape)

Wiz Khalifa Planning Third Solo Album For 2013Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's favorite piff puffer says that fatherhood and a really happy, creative time in his life drew him back to the studio earlier than planned.

Since 2011, Wiz Khalifa has released at least a major label album per year, in addition to his collaborative Mac + Devin Go To High School release with Snoop Dogg. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania emcee and 2008 DXnext alum revealed to Big Boy's Neighborhood that it's a streak he's looking to continue.

"I'm working on another album," revealed the Taylor Gang general and Rostrum Records flagship artist. "I'm planning on dropping it this year, I wasn't going to, but I just got like so much motivation. I been having so much fun, and having my son. I feel like it'd be a great time to put out a really dope, relevant project."

No titles or guests were mentioned. Previously, Wiz released a series of independent releases, including 2006's Rostrum-released Show N' Prove, and 2009's Deal Or No Deal, which was distributed by iHipHop.

You can listen to the full appearance on Big Boy's Neighborhood below:

[News] Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 4/7/2013

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
Tyler, The Creator's "Wolf" out-sells "Goblin" by close to 50,000 units. Papoose's heavily-delayed "Nacirema Dream" is approaching a benchmark, and Drake's "Take Care" crosses 2 million.

Justin Timberlake and his 20/20 Experience will not budge. For a third straight week, the Tennessee native held the #1 spot, and not cult-followed Tyler, The Creator or even Lil Wayne could move him.

Tyler's Wolf did however grab a Top 5 debut, this project fully on the Odd Future Records imprint. Also on the charts was Papoose, who despite not making last week's HipHopDX charts coverage, is approaching 10,000 units sold on his heavily-delayed Nacirema Dream debut album.

As expected, Drake's Take Care did cross the 2 million milestone. It is now the fourth Young Money Entertainment release to go multi-platinum, following Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III and Tha Carter IV, and Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday debut.

Tyler, The Creator's second label release, Wolf, sold just under 90,000 first-week units. The Odd Future front-man's latest effort features some higher profile guest-work than 2011's Goblin. Pharrell, Erykah Badu and former OFWGKTA member Casey Veggies all appear, as do the active members, including Frank Ocean. This is Tyler's first release fully with the group's own label, as Goblin was a one-album deal with XL Recordings. Wolf is distributed by Sony Red.

Wolf outsold Goblin's first-week by nearly 50,000 units. That effort also scored the Los Angeles, California native a #5 debut.

Following Papoose's 2006 seven-figure contract with Jive Records, Nacirema Dream began its campaign. Six and a half years later, much of the album as recorded in the mid '00s was released courtesy of Honor B4 Money/Empire Distribution. The Brooklyn, New York emcee and onetime Kool G Rap and DJ Kay Slay protege worked with East Coast Hip Hop luminaries such as DJ Premier and Buckwild, along with Heatmakerz and Dame Grease. Vocally, the album features Mobb Deep, Jadakiss, Jim Jones and Pap's own wife, Remy Ma. One guest who later criticized the album for an authorized appearance is Erykah Badu. The 20-track effort notably features a sequel to Papoose's early 2000s street hit and lyrical clinic, "Alphabetical Slaughter."

#1. Justin Timberlake - 20/20 Experience - 139,000 (1,426,000)

#3. Tyler, The Creator - Wolf - 89,000 (89,000)

#5. Lil Wayne - I Am Not A Human Being II - 68,000 (285,000)

#12. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - The Heist - 27,000 (553,000)

#36. Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city - 13,000 (837,000)

#67. A$AP Rocky - Long.Live.A$AP - 7,400 (312,000)

#92. T.I. - Trouble Man: Heavy Is The Head - 5,300 (446,000)

#101. Drake - Take Care - 4,700 (2,003,000)

#119. 2 Chainz - Based On A T.R.U. Story - 3,900 (585,000)

#183. Papoose - Nacirema Dream - 2,900 (8,4000)

* data comes from Nielsen Soundscan, rounded to nearest thousandth for units above 10,000, nearest hundredth for units below 10,000. Each week, HipHopDX presents top albums in Hip Hop/related, and five notables.

How will Tyga's Hotel California fare against a possible decline of momentum in the Top 5? Check back on HipHopDX.
